Poetry Moment: Thinking about the mystery...
SARTRE: COURTING SIMONE
What if
the mystery proves
to be nonresponsive?
What if the mystery
doesn't see
or hear
or feel?
What if we are made
in the image
of oblivion?
What if we
are alone?
What if I
pray to you?
-CONSTANCE CAMPBELL
(The Texas Observer, Vol.99 #16, August 10, 2007) p. 19
I laughed out loud after reading the first verse. This is one of the best poems I've read in a long time.
From The Texas Observer: "Constance Campbell lives in Austin. Her poems have been published in Texas Poetry Review and Lilliput Review.")
p.s. You do subscribe to The Texas Observer, don't you? No? You should.

great poem! especially relevent for me as i'm completing a thesis regarding "facing mystery" in my dreamlife. what if mystery turns out to be lame?
dungan, that would be a joke of truly cosmic proportions. Wouldn't it? And Constance Campbell provides an answer. We only have each other. There is a possibly apocryphal Native American poem that ends with this line:
"We are the ones we've been waiting for."
One quick note:
The title should be:
"SARTRE: COURTING SIMONE"
Not:
"SATRE: COURTING SIMONE"
Changeling: thanks for the typo alert; I appreciate that you took the time to post it. But much to my chagrin, I seem to make more of these kinds of mistakes in the online arenas. There's something about my practice online that doesn't include careful proofreading.
